9/11

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I was at work dressed in a tan/khaki skirt, a dark green polo shirt, and my Birkenstocks. It was a busy day. I had received a Court Petition and was on the phone with my truck driver's dispatch in Iowa getting as much information I could about a employee who had filed a law suit. I had only been back to work for a few days since my near fatal car accident. My fractured jaw was healed but it was still difficult doing the simplest things, like chew food, talk. I was reclined back in my chair with my left leg encased in a plastic/metal/plaster cast going over DOT information with the Manager. JE peered over our cubicle wall and just stared at me. I remember mouthing "what?" She said, "hang up." I told my dispatch manager I had to go and as I hung up on his line, another line rang and it was hubby. JE said, " the trade centers in NY, bombed or a plane was flown into them, I dont know, its bad. Security is bringing us a TV." I didnt quite understand the depth of what she was saying until I spoke to hubby. I answered hubby's line, he had jury duty that morning and was at home waiting to go to the courthouse when he saw the news coverage. He told me what he was watching on TV. The office was quiet, silent. very unusual, it was always humming with people on the phones, keyboards, faxes....but instead everyone was glued to their computer or to the TV's which security brought in for us to watch. I called my Father in N.MI on my cell phone while watching the news coverage. I finished out the day, made my 35 minute drive home, even tho I wanted nothing more than to go pick up son#1 from school and be at home with him and hubby. When I arrived home, hubby had dinner fixed (hamburger helper) and he and son #1 were watching the news coverage.

What were YOU doing that day? Please respond in the comments. I know every American remembers exactly what they were doing and where they were at on 9/11.

I was at home babysitting my grandson while my daughter worked. He was still asleep and I sat down with a cup of coffee to watch the Today show just after the first plane struck. I remember the ashen face of Katy Couric and watching in stunned horror as the rest of the day's atrocities unfolded.

I remember walking into work, totally unaware of what was going on. I don't turn the tv on first thing in the morning, no radio to accompany me on the train ride to work. One of my coworkers told me that a plane had hit the WTC. I stood there, not quite comprehending it. I scrounged up a radio and spent a lot of time trying to find a radio station to relay the news. He came into my office "a plane just hit a second tower."

I finally found the right radio station then I phoned my best friend who would be at home.

I remember my mom's friend, also one of our up front ladies, came into work pale, shaking. Her son was in NY at the time and she didn't know if he was okay. It was the first time our presses had been quiet as we all hovered around radios, listening to the horror grow. (She eventually reached her son and I think he's working in Toronto now...hard to keep track of that boy.)

Even the ride home was strange. Everyone was quiet. I truly didn't comprehend the horror until I came home and saw the news. It stopped my heart and I just sat and cried into a pillow as I watched something hours old.

I was at work, 7 mon. pregnant, on the 40th floor in the building where Dick Cheney's office was (downtown Dallas) and we all watched in the conference room on tv. I think like most of us, we watched, and saw but couldn't really believe what we were seeing. The silence in the office, and the lack of airplanes flying by was weird. I know I wanted to be nowhere near downtown Dallas then, as who knew what was next, especially sitting in Cheney's building. We were one of the last buildings in downtown to evacuate, around 2pm and I waddled my pregnant butt out to my car and hauled a** home, watching the Dallas skyline get more distant in my rearview mirror. My 2 older kids were in school, didn't pick them up, but was at home and ready to if need be. God bless the victims families. We will never forget and we are all stronger because of it. In other words, you didn't win you evil terrorists!

I posted on my blog too. This morning as part of homeschool I explained 9/11 to the kids, Brittney really understood and got it, Braden not so much but it is important to them to know.

I'm not an American, but we all were that day. I live in a city very close to the US border. That day, the streets were deserted; everyone was inside watching the news. People rushed to the Red Cross to donate blood, and our local hospitals were put on alert; apparently they sent word down to NY that they would take patients if need be. I wish there had been enough survivors for that. :( There were armed guards at the gates of our local army base (and in true Canadian fashion, they put orange snow fencing around the parts of the base which weren't fenced--that'll teach 'em!).

And it was quiet--so quiet. The local university students stayed in. The streets were deserted and the skies dark. Everyone seemed frozen together in one great spasm of fear and grief.

How frustrating it must be for them to realize that all they did was crash a few planes; it takes more than that to bring down a civilization, more than that to totally draw a veil of darkness over the entire world. They'll never be able to do it, because we are not cowards like they are, and they will not win.

This day is one our generation will use as a benchmark; like my parents and when JFK was killed.

I wrote a detailed account of that day but cant find it; its prolly on the computer that's in storage. I'll post it as soon as I find it.

I was preparing our squadron of F-16s for the daily training flights and my wife was actually on board a C-130 ready to launch for a training mission.

Please remember, and pray for those lost, those serving, and for the future

I was at work: At that time I worked with my mom at a resturant. The t.v. was playing in the corner. Everyone in the room got so quiet and you could see the tears in their eyes. I definitely had tears in mine. I finished work. But I wanted to just go home and be with my family.

I lived on the west coast then, so the first plane hit at 5:46 my time. I was still in bed. I woke up late that morning, showered quickly, and headed to work. I often listened to the radio on the way to work, but that particular day I was listening to an Eric Clapton CD. I didn't find out what had happened until I walked into my school at about 7:20 that morning (10:20 eastern). By that time a plane had hit the Pentagon too.

I was stunned. I spent all day just processing all of this with my students.

I'm originally from CA and was still living there at the time. It was around 6 a.m. and I was just getting up for work....

The rest of that morning is chronicled on my blog.

I also had the honor of remembering Susan Clyne and Jon Schlissel as part of the 2966 Project.
