Snake Away

I have had 3 questions or requests about Snake-Away, Snake Control, Snake-A-Way Snake Repellent. I first used this product about 4 years ago when we had a problem with cottonmouths hanging from some trees in our yard(I think they were after the birds nesting). They were big and nasty tempered and one of the 2 kinds of snakes that have actually chased me , Yes-CHASED me. So, Hubby picked up some of this snake away repellent granules. It works, especially on the poisonous snakes. It seems to work when applied by the directions but if it rains a lot, another treament is needed. I use it around my barn area. I dont recommend any kind of 'snake traps', That is CRAZY! Black snakes like to get inside my barn and get the mice/rats that might hang around my feed bins. The black snakes are excellent rodent killers but they are mean tempered and they will chase and bite. Early this spring I had a little encounter with a large black snake living inside the barn: My Tango with Mr. Black Snake . I put out some snakaway not to long after that little episode because that huge snake got away!

Cotton Mouth
This is usually how these evil-tempered buggers look too. This is the ONLY poisonous snake I have actually chase me and go on the aggressive without being provoked. I HATE these snakes and they are nasty, evil tempered and should be shot dead on sight. Size: 4 - 4 1/2+ ft. The cottonmouth, or water moccasin, gets its name from the cottony-white lining of its mouth, which it displays as a threat to an intruder. Its highly aggressive. The venom is very potent and lethal.

Westerndiamondback

This rattlesnake grows to about 6 - 7 ft. The western diamondback rattlesnake, is without a doubt the most dangerous snake in Oklahoma. A high strung and hot-tempered snake, the western diamondback will stand in defense and strike with little provoking. This snake is responsible for most snakebites, but few are actually fatal. I have only seen 2 of these snakes and they went on thier way without trouble. It was the cottonmouth or black snake that has taken the offense to attack when Ive encountered them.

Copperhead

These quiet snakes grow to about 3 - 3 1/2 ft. Its called Oklahoma's most common venomous snake. This snake should be treated carefully since bites can be severely painful and expensive,on the rare occassion, deadly. A severe bite from a copperhead can cause permanent nerve and muscle damage and disfigurement. Hubby's brother was bitten on his hand while fishing when he was 16 yo. He has a disfigured hand to prove it. These snakes are quiet and a bit creepy!

Timber Rattler or a Velvettail
This is the kind of rattler hubby had a close call with the other day.

Green grass snake
These snakes are harmless and safe to be in my yard, they keep the pests away. Usually they are rarely seen and when they are, they speed away as fast as they can.

Garter Snake

A poplular snake, the lined(garter) snake is an earthworm and slug/bug specialist, and can be found nearly anywhere earthworms, bugs, and slugs are are, including in cities and towns. The garter snake is peaceful and harmless.

Black rat snake

This snake grows to about 4 - 6+ ft. It is non-venomous. The black rat snake is Oklahoma's most common constrictor snake. When approached or encountered, the rat snake can, and usually will, become extremely defensive and can inflict painful bites. Rat snakes are non-venomous, but bites have been known to become infected, usually as a result of bacteria.

The snakes I mentioned are only the ones Ive encountered on a regular basis. The only 2 snakes I do not mind in my yard area are the garter snake and the grass snake, they are harmless snakes. The others mentioned in this post are unwelcome and will be shot on sight. Son #1 has a single shot .410 that is an awesome snake killer, I use without hesitation! There are MANY more venomous and non-venomous snakes in Oklahoma, you can check them out here: Index of Oklahoma Snakes.

twice in two different houses in the TX panhandle we had garter snakes in the house. Once my husband came home for lunch and went to the bathroom. While standing there doing his business he saw movement behind the toilet. The next time it happened my daughter saw one in the laundry room. Thank God they weren't poisonous. In the same house as the laundry room insident, we were in the backyard and the neighbors cat alerted us to a rattler. He wasn't very big and he didn't live to get any bigger, husband shot him. I'm going to get some of that snake away stuff for my yard here.

Yuck! I am so glad you mentioned that stuff. Earlier this year my catahoula brought a snake in and calmly munched on it while my 4 yo son said, mom, the dog brought a snake in and is eating it. Sure, like I believed him. I will now. The other day the cat had one out in the yard. Add that to my shopping list today with the flea stuff. Have a good one!

sailormoon-it sounds like your catahoula AND your cat are keepers!! our little dog will bark at a snake but never get close enough to killit, hes known to bark perched from the safety of the porch or a lawn chair. It sounds like you can use some snake-away. The fleas are bad in Okla too, I swear by Frontline flea/tick once a month application.
